Robots for the work you cannot hire for

Two machines for the industrial floor and the building site: a humanoid that does the work a person would, and an autonomous carrier that moves material across the floor without a driver, to the millimetre. Designed, drawn and built here, on the same engineering as the delivery fleet.

The problem

Three things cap what a plant can produce

None of them is solved by buying another machine tool. They are all about who is standing in front of it, and for how long.

01THE PEOPLE ARE NOT THERE

Positions stay open for months, attrition undoes the training, and the hardest jobs are the hardest to fill. Output ends up capped by hiring rather than by the line.

02PRECISION DRIFTS WITH THE SHIFT

The ninth hour is not the first hour. Placement wanders, tolerance widens, and the cost lands as scrap, rework and warranty rather than as a line on the shift report.

03THE THIRD SHIFT DOES NOT RUN

Machines are idle at night because the crew for that shift does not exist. Capacity that is already paid for sits still for a third of every day.

The answer

A plant cannot hire the people it needs, cannot hold a tolerance through the ninth hour of a shift, and cannot staff the third shift at all. Three problems, one answer: machines that do the work people are not there to do, at a precision people cannot hold, for as long as the line needs to run. And because the plant was laid out around people, the machine has to fit the plant rather than the other way round.

Humanoid

The work a person would do, on the shift nobody can staff

Lifting, placing, loading and tool work — the jobs a plant would hire for if the people were there. It is human-shaped because the plant is: stairs, gangways, walkways between machines, and tools with handles made for hands. The floor does not have to be re-laid for it to start.

Autonomous carrier

Material across the floor, driverless, to the millimetre

Moves stock, parts and finished goods between stations, stores and bays with nobody driving it. It navigates on what is already there rather than on painted lines or rails, and docks to the same point every time, so the part arrives where the next process expects it. It does not take breaks and it does not miss the night.

What we are aiming these at

Narrow on purpose. Industrial and construction work, where the task repeats, the tolerance matters, the hours are unstaffable, or the place is one a person should not have to be.

Stock, parts and finished goods between stations, stores and bays — the trips that eat a shift and need no judgement.

Feeding and unloading equipment that was installed long before anyone specified a robot cell around it.

Repeatable placement

Work where the part has to arrive in the same position every time, and where a few millimetres of drift becomes scrap.

Running the hours that are already paid for in rent, plant and interest, and currently stand still.

Moving material across a construction site — up levels, over uneven ground, into places a forklift cannot reach.

Height, heat, confined spaces and loads heavy enough to injure the person carrying them.

Why the same company

Two product lines, one stack

The delivery fleet and the robotics line are not separate engineering efforts with a shared logo. They are the same four problems, solved once.

ONE CHASSIS DISCIPLINE

Sheet metal, frames, drives and swappable packs. A rover that survives a monsoon kerb and a platform that survives a plant floor are the same fabrication problem with different load cases.

ONE PERCEPTION PROBLEM

Unstructured ground, moving people, poor markings, changing layouts. A site that changes every week is closer to an Indian street than to a European factory that was surveyed once.

ONE CONTROL ROOM

Machines that ask for help when they are unsure, and a person who can take them over. The remote-assist layer the fleet needs is the layer an industrial machine needs to be allowed on a floor at all.

ONE SAFETY RULE

A machine that is not cleared does not run. No demo, no exception, no delivery date that overrides it — on a road or inside a building.
